UNDP Project and Programme Management Workshop Launched
The
United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Libya organized a
four-day national capacity development workshop at the Corinthia
Hotel on the 4th-7th October. The workshop represents a national
first in providing specialized training sessions in UNDP project
and programme management to national project coordinators, who
manage projects carried out by UNDP and the Libyan government,
as well as key national stakeholders.
In his opening speech the UNDP Resident Representative a.i,
emphasized that this training was especially important given the
country office’s increased focus on national implementation,
where projects are implemented by national project managers,
rather than by foreign experts. This mode of project
implementation increases project sustainability, and enhances
national capacities for project design, implementation and
evaluation. It also requires that national project coordinators
are fully aware of UNDP rules and regulations, and are able to
make use of the most advanced and efficient project management
techniques.
The workshop was attended by over 40 national project
coordinators and other representatives from 19 different
government agencies and Secretariats. The attendees were offered
training in internationally acclaimed project management
techniques and were introduced to useful development tools such
as gender mainstreaming and project advocacy.
The event was fully managed by UNDP programme staff in Arabic
language with CAWTAR and UNODC facilitating sessions on gender
mainstreaming and UN orientation
The training sessions during the four days workshop aimed at
furnishing project coordinators with the skills required to
ensure that their projects successfully achieve their
development objectives and enhance project ownership..
The workshop concluded with closing remarks from Dr. Mahmoud Al
Falah, Director of the Environment General Authority, who also
participated in the distribution of certificates to the
participants.
In his closing remarks, the Resident Representative a.i,
reiterated that the current workshop is not a stand-alone event;
rather UNDP Libya is committed to providing future training
sessions subject to the demands and requests of its national
project coordinators.
