On the 10-12th
December 2009, the United Nations Development Programme in Libya
participated in a public awareness campaign for World AIDS day,
organised by the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID) and
the Wattassemmu Charity Foundation.
A large tent was erected in Tripoli’s famous Green Square, which
housed an exhibition of art produced by school children on HIV/AIDS,
as well as stalls providing informational material on the effects of
HIV, modes of transmission and protection mechanisms. The event was
attended by hundreds of school children, NGO workers and curious
passers-by. UNDP Libya set up a stall to raise awareness of its work
on HIV/AIDS prevention.
UNDP Libya enjoys a close partnership with NCID and Wattassemu. It
is supporting NCID in developing a strategic response to HIV/AIDS in
the country and the head of Wattassemo, Dr. Aisha Al Gaddafi, is
also goodwill ambassador for UNDP Libya.
